The Sweetwater girls basketball team had Snyder on the ropes with a hot player at the free throw line and one-point lead with 6.8 seconds left in Friday’s 5-4A game at Mustang Gym.
It was not meant to be.
Just seconds earlier Tavis Black, who had 28 points to lead both teams, had given the Lady Mustangs a 68-67 lead when she hit a driving layup after a pair of missed free throws by Snyder’s Kamiah Davis.
Black was then fouled by Alize Conner after a loose ball scramble on Snyder’s next possession. However, she missed both free throws and Conner, who scored 25 points, won the game for the Lady Tigers at the end by hitting a shot as time expired for a 69-68 victory.
It was a stunning loss for Sweetwater, which had traded leads with Snyder the entire night as neither team could get a clear advantage.
Snyder improved to 4-3 in district while Sweetwater, which goes to Wylie Tuesday to end its season, fell to 2-5.
Both teams have clinched playoff berths, but the loss means Sweetwater will be the district’s No. 4 seed.
Meanwhile, Snyder hosts Brownwood (5-2) Tuesday and can tie for the No. 2 playoff berth with a win.
Both teams struggled at the start, especially Sweet-water, which after jumping to a 3-0 lead went nearly six minutes without a point.
But the teams heated up in the second quarter, and the game was tied 30-30 at halftime. It was back and forth again in the third per-iod, with Snyder holding a one-point edge (48-47) over Sweetwater as the teams entered the fourth stanza.
Both teams then scored 21 points in the last eight minutes. “It was a great game,” said Sweetwater head coach Devin Griffin.
“I am proud of the way the girls are competing right before the playoffs,” she continued.
“I hope we can do something amazing.”
Black got double-figure support from Shavie Green (13 points). Amber Knox and Jessica Poe each scored seven, Jazel Villa four and Nevaeh Sarabia, Ellie Lehnert and Kyla Daniel three. Snyder won by making 18 of 31 free throws to just 6 of 14 for Sweetwater.
