Today is #GivingTuesday

Joseph Grant

Today is Giving Tuesday. It is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving where the idea is now that one has had a fortunate chance to get, now is one’s chance to give to those who are less fortunate.
It is often stylized on social media with a hashtag for the purposes of activism, but one does not have to be a part of a group to give. It is a close cousin to “pay it forward” and runs along the same sort of kind thought.
This isn’t just another excuse to get a person back in the store.
Despite it’s appearance after Thanksgiving, it is actually an international day of giving. The idea was started in 2012 by the 92 Street Y (The New York YMCA) and the United Nations Foundation.
It was seen as a response to the crass consumerism and commercialism to the post-Thanksgiving season of Black Friday and Cyber Monday where shoppers become a little too self-involved over material items and forget the bigger picture of what the season is all about; family and giving love.
If Thanksgiving falls on November 22, 23, 24, or 25, Giving Tuesday will fall in November but if it is on November 26, 27, or 28, it will fall in December.
The date range is November 27 to December 3, and is always five days after the holiday.
