A trio of girls basketball teams from Nolan County — Sweetwater, Roscoe and Highland — are scheduled to start district action today.
Sweetwater (8-14) will go to San Angelo Lake View for its 5-4A opener with tipoff set for 6:15 p.m.
Sweetwater’s boys (2-17) go to Monahans in a non-district game this evening and tip off at 6:30 p.m.
The Roscoe girls (12-8) stay home to host Stamford in their 8-2A opener that starts at 6:15 p.m.
The Roscoe boys (6-9) go to Post for non-district action that starts at 7:30 p.m.
Highland’s girls will open 13-1A action at Hermleigh with the tipoff at 6:30 p.m., while Highland’s boys have a non-district game at Loop.
Blackwell’s teams, meanwhile, will host Robert Lee in District 11-1A with the girls contest at 6:15 p.m. of particular interest. It pairs No. 12 Blackwell (3-0 in district, 15-5 overall) against No. 23 Robert Lee (2-1 in district, 13-3) in a matchup of state-ranked squads.
Sweetwater’s girls placed first at Anson’s basketball tournament on Dec. 27-28 in the Silver Bracket after defeating Anson 46-27 to go 3-1 overall in their final action of 2018.
Sweetwater’s boys try for a fresh start at Monahans as they tune up for their 5-4A opener on Jan. 11.
Roscoe’s girls also finished 3-1 at Anson’s tourney — winning three straight until losing to No. 5 Vega in the Gold Bracket championship game held Dec. 28 — and are vastly improved over a year ago, as are Highland’s girls, who will face a Hermleigh team ranked 15th in 1A.
Highland’s boys are off to a 10-3 start after two wins at the Sterling City basketball tournament, where the girls also played. The Roscoe and Highland boys will both start district play Jan. 11.
