A sign that honored the 1985 state champion Sweetwater High School football team was unveiled on Friday during halftime of Sweetwater's game against Andrews. The sign, located on the south end of Mustang Bowl, features a replica of Texas and mentions the 13-1-1 record by the Mustangs that year. The team beat Tomball in the title game 17-7 for Sweetwater's first, and to date only, football championship in school history. Several members of the 1985 team were on hand for the sign unveiling Friday, as well as their coach that season, W.T. Stapler. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the state title. The current Mustangs defeated Andrews by a score of 56-34 to complete a big night for both teams.
