Sweetwater girls lose, Blackwell girls win in openers

The Sweetwater girls basketball team was defeated in its season-opening contest at Cisco, 87-37, on Saturday. Tavis Black had 11 points for the Lady Mustangs in head coach Sarah Johnson’s Sweetwater debut.
Sweetwater returns to action today with JV and varsity games at Colorado City at 5 and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
The Blackwell girls — ranked No. 14 in Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches — won 51-15 in their season opener at San Angelo Cornerstone Christian.
Emilee Sanderson was Blackwell’s leading scorer with 10 points followed by Myrka Ibarra (nine), Madison Solis (seven), Kiley Cummings (six), Cirstyn Gober (six), Darrian Kenney (six), Jadyn Feitshans (four) and Carli Powers (three). Blackwell hosts No. 12 Roby at 6:15 p.m. today.
