That most wonderful time of the year for sports fans — the Texas high school football playoffs — will have two Nolan County teams.
Sweetwater, which won its last two games with Fort Stockton and Monahans to earn the final playoff berth in District 1-4A, Division II, will take on state-ranked Lubbock Estacado at 8 p.m. Friday at Lubbock’s Lowrey Field. Sweetwater is 4-6 overall this season and Estacado is 10-0, but anything is possible in the playoffs and the Mustangs are currently on a roll. Estacado is the No. 1 seed out of District 2-4A, Division II.
And speaking of hot teams, Blackwell (10-0) plays Friday against Sanderson (4-4) to begin the Class 1A, Division II playoffs. Their bi-district contest is at 6:30 p.m. at Mertzon. Blackwell finished as the No. 1 seed from District 6 and Sanderson is the No. 2 seed out of District 5 D-II. This is the third consecutive year for Blackwell to make the playoffs, and each time the Hornets have made it as a No. 1 seed from their district.
