The pre-district portion of the volleyball season ended for Sweetwater with a 3-0 sweep of Colorado City Tuesday at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater, now 11-18 overall, has won four of its last five matches after a 25-20, 25-11, 25-20 win and the team certainly appears to be playing as well as it has all year.
Head coach Morgan Doyle will now send her team into Friday’s District 5-4A opener with San Angelo Lake View hoping to build on that success. The match will tip off early at 4:30 p.m. at Mustang Gym to avoid conflicting with the Sweetwater-Iowa Park football game here on Friday night.
“I feel we’re playing a lot better as a team,” said Doyle. “We’re doing well transitioning from offense to defense and as a result we’re able to adjust to what the other team does.
“There’s some stuff we should have done better but we played well, especially the second game.”
After trailing by 10-9 in Game 1, Sweetwater was behind only two more times the entire match — 1-0 and 2-1 in Game 3. The Lady Mustangs finished on an 11-0 run in the second game.
Shavie Green had 11 kills and was followed closely by Hannah Mobley (10) and Charity Thompson (9). Bri Moriel and Kierstyn Thompson had three kills each and setter Mia Valdez had 31 assists. Defensively, the Lady Mustangs were led by Mobley’s 14 digs, while Moriel had 11 and Green and Marissa Villanueva had eight. The JV girls also won their match 25-19, 17-25, 25-21 with Victoria Neri, Marlee Hicks and Aly Moore leading the way.
