Sweetwater travels to Wylie for District 5-4A baseball and softball games today.
It’s the last district softball game for 4-3 Sweetwater and Wylie, who will fight for a share of the 5-4A title at 4:30 p.m. Today’s winner will be in a two- or three-way tie with 5-3 Big Spring, which has ended its regular season, and possibly 4-3 Brownwood, which visits 1-6 Snyder today. The loser is tied with Brownwood for third or alone in fourth at 4-4 entering the playoffs that start next week.
Tiebreakers will be held to decide the 5-4A playoff seeding as necessary.
On Friday, Sweetwater beat Snyder 6-1 to clinch a playoff berth, its sixth in the past seven years but first for Alex Fuentez, its new head coach. Wylie has gone 11 days since its last district game back on April 6 when it defeated Snyder 6-2.
Today’s 4:30 p.m. game is also important for Sweetwater’s baseball team, which is 4-2 and brings a three-game winning streak into its game with Wylie (5-0), the District 5-4A leader.
Sweetwater and Wylie have wrapped up playoff spots even though there are still three games left for Wylie and two for Sweetwater. On Friday, Sweetwater won 10-3 over Snyder to solidify its hold on second place and the Mustangs can cut Wylie’s lead to a half-game with a win today. If Wylie wins, the state-ranked Bulldogs will clinch the No. 1 seed in 5-4A.
Sweetwater has already played Wylie twice this season, losing 7-4 at the Abilene ISD tournament in March and dropping a 7-0 decision in the teams' first district meeting March 30 at Sportsman's Park.
