MONAHANS — After its first home win in two years, Sweetwater needed a road win at Monahans to bring home a playoff berth Friday.
For that to happen, the Mustangs needed for their explosive offense and improving defense to work in tandem with each other again like they had in a 35-21 win over Fort Stockton a week earlier.
Sweetwater’s offense — and wide receiver Darian Carr and quarterback Leo Holsey in particular — did its part. And after a slow start, the defense did too by holding the Loboes scoreless in the third quarter to help the visiting Mustangs pull away for a 66-40 win.
Sweetwater, 3-3 in District 1-4A, Division II and 4-6 for the season, ended Monahans’ hopes as well. The Loboes finished the year 2-4 in district and 2-8 overall.
The Mustangs are the No. 4 district seed despite finishing with the third best record along with Snyder and Fort Stockton. Snyder, which defeated Sweetwater and Fort Stockton this season by a total of three points, is the No. 3 seed while Fort Stockton was eliminated from the playoffs since it lost to both Snyder and Sweetwater.
The Mustangs will face a very tough playoff opponent in Lubbock as their bi-district foe is No. 5-ranked Lubbock Estacado, the District 2-4A, D-II winner with a 10-0 season record.
