Sweetwater took the first two games 25-19 and 25-22 in Saturday’s District 5-4A volleyball match, putting the Lady Mustangs on the verge of handing Midland Greenwood its first district loss. And at one point in the third game, Sweetwater was leading 16-15 and poised for a sweep.
But Greenwood had other ideas, winning the next two games to tie the match — followed by an 8-1 Game 5 finish to complete the rally.
With the win, Greenwood improved to 5-0 in district while Sweetwater’s record evened up at 3-3.
Sweetwater led 8-5 in the fifth game, and again at 9-7, before Albany silenced one of the largest home crowds of the season at Mustang Gym with its rally that gave the visiting Rangerettes a 15-10 win, and handed Sweetwater (14-22 overall) one of its most heartbreaking losses of the year.
“We’ve got to learn to finish. We won the first two and then we relaxed,” head coach Morgan Doyle said.
“We have got to be mentally stronger.”
Greenwood won the third game 25-17 after finishing on a 10-1 run. Sweetwater then lost 25-9 in Game 4 to force a fifth game, and was unable to stop the Rangerettes’ momentum after a good start to Game 5.
Charity Thompson had a team-high 10 kills while Shavie Green had nine kills and a team-high five blocks. Hannah Mobley had seven kills and Kierstyn Thompson six. Mia Valdez had 21 digs, Mobley 18 and Bri Moriel 16, and Valdez had a team-high 25 assists for Sweetwater.
Sweetwater's JV team lost 13-25, 13-25 and the freshman team fell 11-25, 12-25. Cazilyn Solis and Nevaeh Sarabia were named the outstanding JV players and Eionna Jennings was the outstanding player for the freshmen.
The season continues on Tuesday as the Lady Mustangs visit Snyder. Tipoff will be 5 p.m. for the freshman match, 6 p.m. for the JV match and 7 p.m. for the varsity match. This will be the team's final road match of the year and the regular season ends Saturday when Sweetwater hosts Big Spring before starting the playoffs.
