SNYDER — Sweetwater was just as cold in Snyder’s gym as the weather outside as the girls and boys basketball teams lost Tuesday’s District 5-4A doubleheader by lopsided margins.
The night began with the Sweetwater girls losing a 72-53 decision to fall to 1-2 in district play. Snyder also won the boys game 64-36, dropping the Mustangs to 1-1 in district play.

The Lady Mustangs had a promising start against the Lady Tigers, leading 20-17 at the end of the first period.
But Snyder’s 18-0 run at the start of the second quarter changed everything.
Sweetwater finally ended the run late in the period but Snyder (2-1) was in full control. The Lady Tigers built their lead to 64-40 by the start of the fourth quarter en route to the win.
It doesn’t get any easier for Sweetwater as the team will host state-ranked Wylie when it returns to action on Friday. The Lady Mustangs got 19 points from Shavie Green and 16 points from Jessica Poe, but was unable to match Snyder’s overall scoring balance as no other player made it into double figures. Snyder was led by Natalee James, who scored 21 points to pace all scorers.

The Mustang boys fell behind Snyder 5-0 before getting on the board and never caught up.
Snyder went wire-to-wire as the Tigers (1-1) raced out to a 15-5 advantage after one quarter. They led 32-15 at halftime over the cold-shooting Mustangs, who for the game scored 45 fewer points than in their 81-66 victory over Big Spring to begin District 5-4A play.
Sweetwater was led by the tandem of Kobe Clark and J.J. Solis, who had 14 and 13 points, respectively. Trey Samaniego and Nathan Kendrick, meanwhile, led Snyder with 15 points each as four Tigers made it into double figures.
Sweetwater, which will return home to face state-ranked Wylie on Friday, fell out of a first-place tie with the Bulldogs, who were idle, but are just a half-game back in the early standings. Wylie and Brownwood are 1-0 while Sweetwater and Snyder are both 1-1.
