Being at home after going just 1-4 over the weekend at Abilene’s Bev Ball Classic, Sweetwater was hungry for a win when the team returned to the volleyball court Tuesday to take on Clyde.
And the Lady Mustangs did just that, as they swept the Lady Bulldogs in three games after having to rally late to win the opener.
Sweetwater trailed 22-15 in Game 1 before finishing on a 10-1 run for a 25-23 win. The Lady Mustangs followed that with a 25-20 win over Clyde in Game 2 and completed the sweep by winning Game 3, 25-17.
Coach Morgan Doyle said it felt “awesome” to win for just the second time. “We’re starting to come together as a team and starting to rely on each other,” she said.
“We are finally getting comfortable on defense,” Doyle said, “and in knowing where to go. This is how we played in our scrimmages, so I knew it was in them.”
There were 10 ties and seven lead changes until the Lady Mustangs’ big surge that allowed them to pull out the win in Game 1.
Game 2 was also tight as Sweetwater held just a one-point lead, 21-20, until winning the last four points and Game 3 ended with a 13-4 Sweetwater run to end the match. It was the Lady Mustangs’ first win on their home court this year in three tries.
Hannan Mobley collected a team-high eight kills against Clyde plus 11 digs and three aces. The other individual standouts for Sweetwater in the match were Charity Thompson with six kills, three blocks, one dig and one ace; Shavie Green with seven kills, three blocks and five digs; Mia Valdez with one kill, one block, 21 assists and 17 digs; Brianna Moriel with four aces and 12 digs; Kierstyn Thompson with four kills and two blocks; Nikki Gutierrez with nine digs; and Marissa Villanueva with five digs.
Sweetwater’s freshman and JV teams both lost to Clyde. The freshmen lost 18-25, 13-25 and the JV fell 21-25, 25-23, 8-25.
Cazilyn Solis (JV) and Paris Houston (freshmen) were selected as the teams’ outstanding players.
