Sweetwater and Monahans were locked in a tight battle here Friday until a late 18-6 run broke things wide open, giving the Mustangs a 55-40 win over the Loboes.
Sweetwater (5-14) led 14-5 after one quarter and 26-20 at halftime. But a 9-0 Monahans run tied it at 29 in the third and the Loboes went up 32-31 on a 3-pointer with 3:56 to play. The Mustangs answered with a 6-2 run at the end of the period to regain a 37-34 edge, however.
Sweetwater dominated from that point, scoring the first nine points of the fourth quarter to basically ice the game.
The win was the first of 2018 for the Mustangs, who go to Merkel on Tuesday for their final non-district game. They host Big Spring next Friday to tip off district play.
“We’re slowly getting better,” said Sweetwater coach Bryan Loera. “Our defense is really coming along and I’m real proud of that.
“We had a good response after (Monahans) made its run and we were able to close it out.”
Sweetwater was led by point guard Kobe Clark, who had 20 points, and J.L. Solis and Kiante McCoy had 13 each. The Mustangs had lost all three games at Lubbock’s FiberMax Caprock Classic played at the end of December, falling to Class 5A Lubbock High 54-41, Lubbock Monterey 69-51 and Denison 62-53 at the prestigious event before opening 2018 with a 72-59 loss at Lubbock High Tuesday.
Sweetwater also got scoring against Monahans from Jackson Foster with five points, Ky Hoover with two and Tristan Morrow and Tristan Longoria with one apiece.
Sweetwater lost to Monahans in both sub-varsity games as the JV fell 51-43, while the freshmen lost 45-13.
