Stangs lose final tuneup for district at Monahans, 40-36

MONAHANS — In its final pre-district game, Sweetwater gave host Monahans a tough four-quarter battle before losing a 40-36 decision on Friday night.
Sweetwater, which starts district Jan. 11 when the team entertains Snyder, trailed 12-6 after one period but won the second stanza 14-8 to tie Monahans 20-20 at halftime. Sweetwater trailed 33-26 after three quarters, but won the fourth 10-7 to end within four.
Daiman Atkins had 14 points, with three 3-pointers, for Sweetwater and Darian Carr had 10, including two treys. Logan Wedin also hit a trey and had seven points. Harrison Foster had three points and Tony Padilla one to complete the scoring for Sweetwater, which is off Tuesday before hosting Snyder three days later.
“We were very competitive,” said coach Kevin Wright. “I thought it was the hardest we’ve played all season.”
