Summer has ended for Sweetwater High School’s volleyball players. Wednesday will mark the start of their two-a-day practices for the 2018 season, with just this week to finish preparing for next Monday’s opening matches.
According to head coach Morgan Doyle, practices are scheduled Wednesday and Thursday from 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. at the SHS gym. A parent meeting will also be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. All paperwork must be completed by players in order for them to work out.
The Lady Mustangs will then have two scrimmages before starting the regular season — on Friday at San Angelo Lake View and Saturday at Big Spring. Both scrimmages will give the varsity, JV and freshman teams at least two matches each.
Sweetwater will begin its regular season next week with the first two matches being played in its gym.
The Lady Mustangs host Denver City on Aug. 6 and return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 7 when they face Brownwood.
The team also has home matches with Clyde, Bangs, Wall and Colorado City before its district opener on Sept. 21 when it hosts San Angelo Lake View.
Sweetwater now plays in a brand-new District 5-4A that will also include Big Spring, Midland Greenwood and Snyder.
The Lady Mustangs have qualified for the volleyball playoffs each of the past five seasons but lost in the first round each time.
Doyle has three new assistant coaches this year — Tim Scherwin, Shawna Braswell and Loni Mendez.
