After taking a 2-1 lead by winning consecutive games by double digit margins, the Sweetwater volleyball team let their advantage slip away as the Lady Mustangs lost to Snyder in five games Saturday at Mustang Gym in a District 5-4A matchup.
Snyder began Saturday’s match by rallying to defeat Sweetwater 26-24 in Game 1. But both the second and third games were dominated by Sweetwater, which won 25-15 and 25-14, respectively. But from then on, the breaks went Snyder’s way as the visitors came back to square the match at 2-2 with a 25-18 win, then beat Sweetwater again 15-9 in the fifth and deciding game.
Sweetwater is now 1-2 in district (12-20 overall) as it prepares for Tuesday’s match at Big Spring. Snyder improved its mark to 1-1.
Hannah Mobley finished with 14 kills, 25 digs and five aces; Shavie Green had 12 kills, five blocks and 14 digs; Charity Thompson had 11 kills, four blocks, six digs, three assists and three aces; Kierstyn Thompson had nine kills, four digs and two blocks; Mia Valdez had four kills, two blocks, 26 digs and 35 assists and one ace; and Bri Moriel, Marissa Villanueva and Nikki Gutierrez had 22, 19 and 13 digs, respectively.
“We got lazy,” said head coach Morgan Doyle. “They wanted it more. Big Spring will be a big game for us.”
