SISD Superintendent Dr. George McFarland selected for elite Superintendent Academy

Lead Writer

The Thompson Executive Leadership Institute in Texas has selected Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Dr. George McFarland as one of 25 superintendents for their academic scholarship to attend the Superintendent Academy.
The Thompson Executive Leadership Institute Superintendent Academy is a nationally known advanced leadership development program for superintendents in Texas and surrounding states. The goal is to assist successful superintendents in achieving even higher levels of discipline and growth.
Upon completion of the Thompson Executive Leadership Institute Superintendent Academy, superintendents will have gained a “think tank” atmosphere of open and challenging discussion, exposure to new and different ways of improving, the required training to renew their administrator certificates, a new network of school superintendents, and new strategies for allocating time for structured growth activities.
Superintendents accepted into the academy will receive an opportunity in October to observe high performing, high poverty schools in New York City and to assess why they have been effective.  The trip will also have study sessions at Columbia University. The chosen superintendents and board members will also attend the Joint Visioning Conference in Austin in February featuring Ian Jukes, an internationally acclaimed expert on future trends in education.  He is also founder and Executive Director of the InfoSavvy Group, an international educational consulting firm.
Criteria for nomination of the academy were as follows:
•be employed and currently serving as a superintendent of schools
•have at least two years of experience as a school superintendent
•be seen as a leader by his/her colleagues
•have demonstrated that he/she is a student of his/her profession
•have the support of his/her board
