S’water girls win meet at Abilene Cooper

Sweetwater’s girls scored 43 points for a two-point team win over Abilene High at Abilene Cooper’s powerlifting meet last Friday.
Sweetwater, competing in its second meet this season, had individual winners in four weight classes. They were Cyera Pieper (530 total pounds) in the 114-pound class; Whitney Garcia (660) in the 165-pound class; Jessica Serrano (630) in the 181-pound class; and Allison Torres (840) in the 259-pound-plus class.
Sheyla Barrera (705) was second in the 259-pound class and placing third was Nikki Gutierrez (520) in the 123-pound class.
Also, Kathryn Browning (450) placed fourth in the 123-pound class, as did Sonora Medellin (595) in the 148-pound class and Sierra McCoy (645) in the 259-pound class.
Also getting a point for Sweetwater was Angelica Beltran (590), who placed fifth in the 148-pound class, and Emerald Torres (555) was sixth in the same class.
Sweetwater compiled its narrow winning margin by having 10 girls with at least a top-five finish compared to nine for Abilene High, which matched Sweetwater by having four individual weight class winners.
The Lady Mustangs will go to Clyde for their next meet on Feb. 8.
