AUSTIN — Roscoe’s Bonnie Wilkinson and Jayden Gonzales placed in Class 2A state track and field competition but failed to medal on Saturday.
Wilkinson missed a UIL medal by just one spot as she placed fourth in the girls triple jump with a leap of 36-4 1/2. The bronze went to Gruver’s Bailey Maupin, who was third with a leap of 36-10 1/4.
Wilkinson won the event in her last state appearance in 2017.
Gonzales was sixth in the boys pole vault with a leap of 13-6 earlier Saturday even though he had the fourth-best jump.
Christia Jernigan of Garrison, Warren Williams of Muenster and Casen Conlee of Hico tied for the third-best vault at 14-0, but Jernigan was awarded the bronze due to having fewer misses.
Alexa Valenzuela of Refugio (38-0) won the girls triple jump while Anthony Meacham of Woodsboro (15-0) won the boys pole vault.
Wilkinson and Gonzales will both compete collegiately in Abilene next year, Wilkinson at Abilene Christian University and Gonzales at McMurry University.
