Plowgirls get 1st 8-2A victory; Hornets on roll entering 13-1A

Roscoe’s girls got their first district win Tuesday as they rolled to a 48-25 win vs. Hawley in District 8-2A basketball action at Roscoe’s gym.
Roscoe, now 13-9 overall and 1-1 in district, got a team-high 15 points from Victoria Martinez in the victory and led 15-2, 28-6 and 33-15 at the breaks.
Also scoring points were Veronica Cuellar (8), Bonnie Wilkinson (7), Jaci Alexander (6), Sadie McCambridge (6), Shauna McCambridge (4) and Riley Sheridan (2). The Plowgirls go to Albany (2-0) on Friday.
Roscoe’s boys — who will open district on Friday at Albany — had a non-district game Tuesday as they hosted Forsan. Results were not available at press time.
Highland’s boys, who will start District 13-1A by visiting Trent on Friday, picked up their fifth straight win Tuesday and improved to 12-3 overall with a 78-30 win over Midessa to end non-district play. However, Highland’s girls (10-9 overall) fell to 0-2 in district as they lost, 76-48, at home to Westbrook. The Lady Hornets trailed by just eight, 32-24, at halftime.
Highland’s girls effort was led by Zoe Cornett’s 20 points, while London Garrett had nine points, Maggie Bowen eight, Kenady Hall five and Heather Monroe and Kendra Baucom three points apiece.
Eli Sauer paced the boys’ victory with 17 points while Sam Spaulding and Nolan Montgomery had 12 points and Jordan Johns 10. Jacob Hamilton, Dakota Bowen and Richard Fomby had seven, Ethan Peacock four and Konner Turney two.
Spaulding (13), Sauer (11), Fomby (10) and Montgomery (nine) led a 60-13 win at Loop in a game played this past Friday. Turney added seven points, Hamilton and Bowen four and Peacock two for the Hornets.
