Plowgirls’ season ends with 32-29 loss to S-City

WINTERS — Defense has been a strength for this year’s Roscoe girls basketball team, and the Plowgirls were solid again in that area when the team faced Sterling City in a Class 1A, Division II bi-district matchup on Monday. However, Sterling City was able to effectively shut down Roscoe’s offense — especially in the final two quarters — enough to pull out a 32-29 victory and end the Plowgirls’ year. The low-scoring win advances the Lady Eagles — the third-place team from District 14-A — to the area round later this week against Priddy, while Roscoe — the No. 2 team in District 13-A — ends up 19-12.For a big stretch of the second and third quarters, Roscoe seemed to be very much in control as the Plowgirls turned a four-point (9-13) deficit into a five-point (22-17) lead over Sterling City. But Sterling City regained the lead, 23-22, with a 6-0 run to end the quarter.Faith Boren gave Ros-coe a 28-27 lead — its last of the game — with 3:47 left. However, Savannah Jones gave Sterling City the lead for good when she scored with 2:12 to play. The game then came down to free throws and Sterling City made just enough to beat Roscoe, despite going just 3-for-9 down the stretch. Boren had 14 points to pace the Plowgirls as she shared game high-point honors with Jones. They were the only players in double figures. Eva Aguayo had five, Shelby Brown and Carolina Perez three and Stina Tomlin and Torrey Willman two.Six seniors — Boren, Perez, Willman, Tomlin, Mirian Solis and Kendall Moses — played their final game for Roscoe.
