Mustangs grab No. 2 berth in 5-4A with win at Brownwood

BROWNWOOD — A late first-quarter surge lifted the Sweetwater boys basketball team to a 16-7 lead at Brownwood in the teams’ final regular season game.
The Mustangs were ahead to stay from then on as they claimed the No. 2 playoff berth Tuesday in District 5-4A with a 53-41 win.
Both Sweetwater and Brownwood finished with 4-4 records. But Sweetwater gets the No. 2 spot after beating Brownwood twice, including 41-35 on Jan. 26.
Led this season by first-year head coach Bryan Loera, the Mustangs will now face Graham in bi-district next week. More details will be given later.
Sweetwater led just 8-7 before outscoring Brown-wood 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Tristan Longoria’s trey to start the second period in-creased the Mustangs’ advantage to 19-7, and they led Brownwood 23-11 at intermission.
Sweetwater (10-19 overall) then began the second half on a 9-2 run to increase its led to 19, 32-13, and the Mustangs led 41-25 as they entered the fourth quarter.
Brownwood pulled within 50-41 with 44 seconds left, but Sweetwater shut down the host team after that and scored the last three points at the free throw line.
J.L. Solis led Sweetwater with 20 points, including five 3-pointers. Kobe Clark, Jackson Foster and Kiante McCoy had eight points and Longoria seven, while Logan Wedin scored two points. Isyah Campos had 10 to lead Brownwood.
