After five straight playoff appearances, Monday’s start of the 2018 baseball season at Sweetwater holds promise for making a long run once again.
The Mustangs return six athletes who were first team or second team all-district players in 2017, though they will have some new faces when they take on Ranger Junior College’s JV at 1 p.m. Monday in Ranger.
Sweetwater’s returning first team all-district players are catcher Kiante McCoy, infielder Chris Thompson and outfielders Isak Alvarez and Kobe Clark, while the returning second team all-district players are infielder Mason Maxwell and outfielder Ky Hoover.
All six are seniors, and two of them are entering their third year as full-time starters.
McCoy is likely to see action in the infield this year as well as the outfield. But that versatility is typical of the vast majority of Sweetwater’s players including Thompson, the top returning pitcher who played second base last year; Maxwell, the third baseman the past two years; and the entire starting outfield of Alvarez, Clark and Hoover.
The long list of pitching candidates — in addition to Thompson — includes Hoover, Maxwell, Clark, McCoy, Tristan Longoria, Antonio Heredia, Tyler Warner and Mathew Hernandez.
The other infield candidates are Longoria, Heredia, Clark, Hoover, Alvarez and Hernandez. Hernandez and Longoria can also play the outfield and Warner and Thompson can play catcher. Roland Herrera is entering his 10th year as head coach.
