Michael Lawrence, who is beginning his second year as a starting wide receiver at North Texas after a standout high school career at Sweetwater, has earned national collegiate recogni-tion for his pass catching skills as a member of the Mean Green football team.
The 5-10, 186-pounder is one of 50 players across the country to be included on the Biletnikoff Award watch list for the 2018 season. It comes after a year when Lawrence had a team-high 62 catches for 819 yards and four TDs as a sophomore.
The Biletnikoff Award, named for former college and professional star receiver Fred Biletnikoff, is given to the nation’s top college receiver and presented by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc. for the past 24 years.
Lawrence and the other players represent nine FBS conferences, plus independent UMass. North Texas is one of seven schools with two receivers on the preseason watch list along with California, Louisville, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Toledo and West Virginia. Jalen Guyton is North Texas’ other player included on the watch list.
The Mean Green begins its season Sept. 1 when it hosts SMU. North Texas is the preseason pick to win the Conference USA West Division by Texas Football magazine. The award will be presented live Dec. 6 on The Home Depot College Football Awards with the broadcast set for 6-8 p.m. (CST) on ESPN.
