GAIL — With No. 1-ranked Jayton up 22-14 and gaining momentum after getting back-to-back second-quarter scores, No. 4-ranked Blackwell found itself at a crossroads late in the first half of Friday’s Class 1A D-II quarterfinal.
The Hornets faced fourth-and-goal at Jayton’s 3-yard line with slightly over a minute left after Joel Guia was stopped for a 1-yard loss on third down. But quarterback Michael Lowry handed off to his running back again and Guia just got in for the touchdown. The two-point kick by Mickey Toasaksiri tied it at 22 and a defensive stop kept the game tied at halftime.
That not only restored Blackwell’s momentum but seemed to light a fire under the Hornets after they came out for the second half.
