SAN ANGELO — Sweetwater High School’s softball team had a season-high run total and did it in just four innings Tuesday, in a 19-3 run-rule rout at San Angelo Lake View.
In the District 5-4A opener for both teams, the Lady Mustangs got contributions from everyone as each of the 11 players seeing action scored and eight players had at least one hit.
Bri Moriel and Annisa McCollom, the 1-2 batters in the lineup, scored three times while Tavis Black, Jazzy Villa and Kaci Webb each had three RBIs and McCollom had two bases-loaded walks. Sweetwater had 11 hits and was helped by 10 walks and six errors committed by the Maidens.
Sweetwater led 2-0 after one inning and 7-0 entering the third, when the Lady Mustangs sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on four hits for an insurmountable 17-0 lead. Lake View scored three runs in its half of the third, but the Lady Mustangs scored two in the fourth inning to end the game by the run rule.
The winning pitcher was Elli Lehnert, who pitched a four-inning complete game.
Coach Tim Scherwin said his team (7-8) showed up ready to play. “You could tell by the way they were acting the last few days in practice and today that this team is confident right now,” he said.
“The entire offense was on point as everyone contributed tonight.
“That’s what’s so exciting about this team.”
Sweetwater’s next district game is Friday, as the Lady Mustangs go to Midland Greenwood before hosting Snyder in their 5-4A home opener which will be next Tuesday, March 19.
