After seeing its season record drop below .500 following five straight losses at the Leander tournament over the past weekend, the Sweetwater softball team got a much-needed boost in Tuesday’s non-district contest with Lubbock Estacado at Jerry Collins Complex.
In their next-to-last tune-up for next week’s district opener, the Lady Mustangs breezed to a 16-1 victory over the Lady Matadors as they improved to 6-7 for the season.
Tuesday’s game was halted by the run rule in the bottom of the third inning with no outs when a single by Blayke Bewley scored pinch-runner Nevaeh Sarabia to give Sweetwater a 15-run cushion. Sarabia ran for Kaci Webb, who singled to start the inning.
“It was nice to have a confidence booster,” said coach Tim Scherwin.
“We need to start focusing on what we have to do to get ready for district. We need to get everybody healthy. But the great thing, at least from my perspective, is that due to having kids out we’ve had other kids who have stepped up and made bigger contributions, which will help us out in the long run. But I think we’ll be pretty much back at full strength by (next week).”
Sweetwater needed just two hits for a 5-0 lead in the first inning, then sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run second that blew the game open.
Jazzy Villa reached on a bases-loaded error in the first inning to score the first two runs, and a single by Emerald Torres brought in two more runs. A passed ball scored Torres to make it 5-0.
It took just four second-inning hits for Sweetwater to score its 10 runs, thanks to more Estacado generosity with five walks as well as two errors. Torres stroked a two-RBI double to cap the inning while Webb and Bri Moriel had two-RBI singles and Bewley also singled.
Kara Lehnert allowed just one unearned run on the mound to get the victory.
“I think our kids are ready for district,” said Scherwin. “They are ready for the next phase and ready to see what they can do.”
