GREENWOOD — Sweetwater had three top-three girls athletes in their weight class and a fourth-place finish as well on Saturday at the Region 1, Division 2 powerlifting meet held at Greenwood High School.
Sweetwater’s three third-place athletes were Nikki Gutierrez in the 123-pound class, Allison Torres in the 259-plus class and Sheyla Barrera in the 259-pound class; all three are alternates to the state meet.
Torres’ total lift of 900 pounds was 20 less than the No. 2 state qualifier, Perryton’s Irma Rodriguez.
Barrera lifted 795 pounds, 55 fewer than Borger’s No. 2 state qualifier Winter Back, and Gutierrez’s 655-pound total lift was just 20 pounds less than No. 2 state qualifier Britney Olivas of Dumas.
Bri Moriel was fourth in the 114-pound class with a total lift of 545 pounds.
The four top-four finishes accounted for the Lady Mustangs’ 11 team points, tying them with San Angelo Lake View for fifth place. Also for Sweetwater, Victoria Neri placed seventh in the 148-pound class (605) for the Lady Mustangs and Sierra McCoy was seventh in the 259-pound class (685), while Jessica Serrano was 11th in the 181-pound class (630).
Three of the Lady Mustangs — Gutierrez, Torres and McCoy — also competed in regionals for Sweetwater a year ago.
