Sweetwater lost its non-district match Saturday in three games when the Lady Mustang volleyball team played an afternoon match in Hawley. Sweetwater —, which returns to District 5-4A play at 6 p.m. Tuesday when it goes to San Angelo Lake View — lost 17-25, 22-25, 15-25.
“We just didn’t show up. I feel we may have gone into this game thinking we had it won,” said head coach Morgan Doyle, whose team was coming off a 5-4A win last Tuesday at Big Spring that kept Sweetwater in district playoff contention.
The Lady Mustangs’ JV also lost 15-25, 17-25 in their match, but Sweetwater’s freshmen, after falling 19-25 in Game 1, came back to pull out their match in three games by winning the last two 28-26 and 25-21.
“Our freshmen were able to overcome and pull out the win,” Doyle said of the team’s comeback victory.
“I was super impressed by their will to not give up and fight for every single point. It shows me that what we are working on in practice and the moves we are making within the program are paying off,” the Lady Mustangs’ head coach added. “They’re super fun to watch and I am excited for this group of ladies. Coach (Loni) Mendez is doing a great job with them as well.”
Tuesday will start the second half of district play.
