BROWNWOOD — A state-ranked Brownwood team claimed a 4-2 softball win over Sweetwater on Friday.
Brownwood (2-0 district) led 4-0 after three innings, but Sweetwater came back to score two runs in the fifth and had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh after a two-out infield single by Hannah Mobley.
After fouling off three pitches on a 2-2 count, Sweetwater’s Bri Moriel flied to center field, ending the Lady Mustangs’ hopes of pulling off a comeback win in their District 5-4A opener.
Moriel’s RBI triple in the fifth inning scored Jazzy Villa, who singled, for Sweetwater’s first run and Blake Bewley’s single cut the lead to 4-2, but a three-run third inning by Brownwood was too much for the Lady Mustangs to overcome.
Both teams had seven hits, but Brownwood also took advantage of four errors by Sweetwater. Two of Brownwood’s runs were unearned.
Sweetwater now returns home to face Big Spring at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Kara Lehnert pitched five innings Friday, with Elli Lehnert finishing up.
