For Sweetwater, the real season begins at San Angelo Lake View at 5 p.m. today in the District 5-4A softball opener for both teams.
In its final non-district game, Sweetwater (6-8) was defeated 8-2 at Andrews this past Friday.
Head coach Tim Scherwin said Sweetwater was more competitive vs. Andrews than it looked. The teams played on even terms except for the second inning when Andrews scored five runs.
After Monday’s practice, Scherwin said the outlook for the Lady Mustangs appears to finally be on the upswing since the team is healthy now.
Among those back in the fold are Elli Lehnert, who pitched against Andrews on Friday. Lehnert missed most of non-district play while recovering from surgery she had several months ago after she went down with an ACL injury at the start of the school year.
“We are headed into district play with our minds in a good place. We know what we’re capable of,” Scherwin said. “We just need to realize the magnitude of each play and execute the way we know we can.”
After today’s game, the Lady Mustangs will travel to Greenwood on Friday.
