Lady Hornets all alone atop 11-1A

BRONTE — Blackwell on Tuesday beat Bronte 46-27 for the undisputed lead in the District 11-1A girls basketball race after Veribest lost the same day, 52-35, in its game with Water Valley.
Blackwell, in improving to 5-0 in district and 17-5 for the season, leads Veribest (4-1) by a full game with seven remaining. The Lady Hornets will host Veribest this Friday.
Blackwell swept its doubleheader as the boys (2-2) also defeated Bronte, 62-41, led by Michael Lowry’s 22 points.
Kiley Cummings paced the girls’ win with 10 points as well as six steals. Other Blackwell contributors were Madison Solis (nine points, seven rebounds, team-high four assists and two steals), Vickie Davis (seven points, team-high 10 rebounds and three steals), Jadyn Feitshans (five points, one block, three rebounds), Carli Powers (five points, four rebounds), Cirstyn Gober (four points, block), Darrian Kenney (four points, four boards) and Myrka Ibarra (two points).
The Lady Hornets came into Tuesday’s game ranked No. 10 in Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Veribest was ranked No. 21 prior to its game with Water Valley, now 4-2 in 11-1A and just ahead of 3-2 Robert Lee.
