Two losses by eight combined points — including a two-point loss one week earlier — have kept Highland from getting off to a 6-0 start this season.
But the Hornets ended a long road swing — four games — on a winning note with a 50-27 win at Moran Friday in their next-to-last non-district outing.
After a first half that saw the teams battle to a 14-14 deadlock, a 20-0 third period run that began with a 46-yard kickoff return by Baily Garrett put Highland ahead to stay.
After Garrett’s TD, El Sauer added two TD runs as Highland took a 34-14 lead to the fourth quarter.
Sauer finished the game with 228 yards rushing and three scores, and also threw a 16-yard pass to Richard Fomby for the Hornets’ last TD. In addition to his catch, Fomby ran for two scores in the game and was successful on four PAT kicks.
Highland did almost all of its damage on the ground, rushing for 296 of its 312 total yards with only four pass attempts. Moran, now 3-3, ran for 114 yards and threw for 100.
Top tacklers for Highland were Hayden Adams with eight solo stops; Nolan Montgomery with six solo tackles and two assists; Dakota Bowen with five solos and four assists; Dylan Phillips with five solo tackles; Garrett with two solo tackles and five assists; Max Ferguson with three solo tackles and one assist; and Fomby with two solo tackles and one assist.
