The Highland boys golf team didn’t play Wednesday at the Region II-1A golf tournament at San Angelo’s Quicksand Golf Course due to bad weather. No problem: the Hornets will still get to play in the Class 1A state tournament at Austin next month.
Because Highland was in second place after Tuesday’s first round, the team’s opening 347 qualifies them for the state tournament at the Lions Municipal Golf Course on May 20-21.
The Hornets’ Konner Turney tied for the second-place medalist honor with a 76, one shot behind Seth Bearden of Crowell. Also on Highland’s team are Seth Garrett (87), Ethan Peacock (90), Sam Spaulding (94) and Ruger Duniven (100).
Garrett was tied for 16th among medalists, Peacock tied for 23rd, Spaulding tied for 33rd and Duniven tied for 47th.
Maggie Bowen of Highland played as a girls medalist and shot 134 to tie for 52nd place.
Motley County (345) won the team title and Sterling City (358) placed third after winning a one-hole playoff for the final state berth.

The Highland boys golf team includes (L-R) Ethan Peacock, Ruger Duniven, Konner Turney, Sam Spaulding, Seth Garrett and coach Kyle Jeffrey. Highland girls medalist Maggie Bowen is also pictured.
