It’s been only two years since Highland sent a boys golfer (Garrett Muncy) to the state tournament.
But when the Hornets hit the links Monday for the opening round of the Class 1A tournament, they will be the first boys team from Highland to play in the event in 43 years.
This year’s 36-hole tournament will be played at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
Highland’s five-person team includes Ruger Duniven, Seth Garrett, Ethan Peacock, Sam Spaulding and Konner Turney. They qualified for state by shooting a one-day 347 at the Region 2-1A tournament at San Angelo last month for a second-place finish.
On Monday, Highland’s players will tee off on the No. 1 hole starting at 8 a.m. along with players from Gilmer Union Hill (Region 3) and Iredell (Region 4).
Highland began its journey to reaching the state tournament by winning its district tournament April 8 in Sweetwater.
Garden City is the defending 1A champion and will have a team in the tournament again this year.
