GREENWOOD — A late Sweetwater surge Tuesday fell short at Greenwood as the Rangerettes defeated Sweetwater, 54-51, in the teams’ District 5-4A game.

Greenwood (1-0) led the entire fourth quarter and was up by as much as 10 at one point, but Sweetwater rallied behind the heroics of Black, who scored 14 of her 19 points in the final stanza to lead all scorers.
But Greenwood had a little more balance, placing three players in double figures to two for Sweetwater.
The Lady Mustangs also got 10 points from Shavie Green, nine from Kyla Daniel, seven by Amber Knox, four from Mia Valdez and two from Nevaeh Sarabia.
The leading scorers for Greenwood were Kensleigh Ellis and Teresa Rodriguez with 12 and Taylor Payton, who finished with 10 points for the Rangerettes in their district opener.
