BRECKENRIDGE — An eight-point lead in the latter stages of the third quarter went south for Sweetwater in Monday’s playoff against Graham and turned into a 52-47 deficit entering the final period.
Graham then used free throws to ice a 69-56 win in the teams’ Class 4A bi-district matchup and eliminate the Lady Mustangs with an amazing 31-of-36 effort — including 17-of-19 by Ryan Gober — on Monday. The victory advances the Lady Blues (20-11) to face Stephenville in the area playoffs while Sweetwater — the No. 3 seed from 5-4A — ends its year at 13-19.
Graham went on a 17-4 run after Amber Knox hit a 3 to give Sweetwater a 43-35 lead, capping an 18-4 run by the Lady Mustangs in the third quarter. Sweetwater never recovered from Graham’s run. It was still a three-point game (52-55) when Tavis Black hit a layup with about 4 1/2 minutes left, but the Lady Blues finished on a 14-4 run that was a free throw parade led by Gober, who led all scorers with 25 points.
Black had 20 for Sweetwater, while Knox finished with 14 and a third senior starter, Shavie Green, had eight points. Also scoring for Sweetwater in the game were four underclassmen — Kyla Daniel (7), Kierstyn Thompson (4), Alex Bell (2) and Kyrsten Smith (1).
Until the fourth quarter it was a back-and-forth game with a total of 10 lead changes.
Sweetwater ended the first quarter on an 8-3 run to go ahead 13-10. However, Graham would return the favor by ending the second period on a 10-3 run to lead 29-24 at halftime. It came with Black and Green on the bench after picking up their second fouls.
Knox and Black later had all but three points during the Lady Mustangs’ 18-4 run in the third quarter.
