SNYDER — After an early 2-2 tie, Snyder used a 10-0 run to put Sweetwater away on Tuesday in a 62-33 win at Snyder’s gym that keeps the Tigers — who improved to 5-0 in District 5-4A — in first place by a game over Greenwood. Sweetwater is now 0-5.
Snyder led 18-8 after the first quarter, 43-14 at halftime and 48-22 after three quarters, improving to 23-6 overall. Greenwood defeated Lake View 79-38 Tuesday night. With their wins, both Snyder and Greenwood clinched berths in the state playoffs.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater badly needs a win at home over Big Spring (1-3) on Friday to keep the Mustangs’ hopes for a playoff berth alive.
While Darian Carr of Sweetwater had 15 points to lead all scorers, Snyder had more balance as seven Tigers had between four and 14 points. The last total was by reserve Christian Zapata, while Teafale Lenard had 12 and Alonzo Wesley 11 for Snyder despite very little playing time in the second half.
A 25-6 second quarter by the Tigers sealed the win as Snyder used its superior height and athleticism to pull away from Sweetwater.
In addition to Carr’s 15, Sweetwater got six from Tony Padilla and Harrison Foster and two by Jaden Hernandez, Kei’Arriyen Griffin and Jonathan Gallegos.
