Blackwell wins but Roscoe, Highland are eliminated

The number of Nolan County playoff teams is now two as Blackwell won, but Roscoe and Highland both lost.
On Thursday, Blackwell — the District 7-1A, D-II champion — won a 61-14 decision vs. Guthrie but Roscoe, the No. 3 team in District 4-2A, D-II, lost 39-32 against Farwell. On Friday, Highland, the runnerup to Blackwell in District 7-1A, D-II, lost to Jayton 54-30 in its bi-district game.
Blackwell 61, Guthrie 14
HERMLEIGH — Blackwell, which missed the playoffs in 2016, is now 11-0 after Thursday’s dominant win.
The Hornets led 12-0 after one period and 39-14 at halftime, and a 22-0 run in the third quarter ended things early due to the 45-point mercy rule.
Up next for Blackwell is No. 1-ranked Balmorhea (10-0) at a date, time and place to be announced later.
Brandon Brinkman and Michael Lowry shared quarterbacking duties for Blackwell and combined to throw seven touchdowns vs. Guthrie.
Hunter Clark had a huge day for Blackwell as well, as the senior caught four TD passes and ran for two scores in the game. All four of Clark’s catches for 102 yards resulted in TDs, as did two of his three runs for 75 yards.
Clark had scoring catches of 39 and 46 yards from Brinkman and 9 and 8 yards from Lowry. His two TD runs went for 35 and 12 yards. Also catching TD passes for Blackwell were Orrin Sirmons (40 yards), Cameron Coldiron (38 yards) and Kyler Walls (30 yards), all from Brinkman, with Walls’ TD catch ending the game.
Brinkman was 7-for-9 for 242 yards, and Sirmons and Coldiron both had two catches. Coldiron ran for 41 yards and Brinkman 20. Walls kicked three PATs and Cade McKee caught a two-point pass from Lowry.
Clark had eight tackles and one interception and McKee, Joe Sanchez and Nathaniel Shipman also had eight tackles for the Hornets.
Farwell 39, Roscoe 32
POST — Roscoe led 14-7 after one quarter of play and 26-20 at the end of the first half, but Farwell eventually won thanks to RB Miguel Vasquez, who ran for 329 yards and five touchdowns as Roscoe finished at 6-5.
Vasquez’s TD runs went 9, 57, 31, 64 and 34 yards. He had over three-fourths of Farwell’s 430 run yards, and the Steers also passed for another 231 yards.
For Roscoe, Jose Ortega had TD runs of 9 and 59 yards and he also caught a 15-yard TD pass from Jayden Gonzales. Francisco Garcia also had a 9-yard TD run and Gonzales threw a 43-yard TD pass to Brandon Lavalais.
Jayton 54, Highland 30
HERMLEIGH —Highland led 14-8 after one quarter but the Hornets (7-4) were outscored 46-16 after that.
Jayton went ahead to stay with an 18-0 second period, then added two more scores against Highland to up their lead to 40-14 before the Hornets finally scored. Jayton (8-3) will face Ackerly Sands in the next round of the playoffs.
Nolan Montgomery led Highland with 85 yards rushing and two TDs as well as three catches for 79 yards and a TD. Max Ferguson was 4-of-7 passing for 65 yards and a TD. Richard Fomby ran for 57 yards and one TD and also kicked three PATs. Montgomery also led the defense with 8.5 tackles while Dylan Phillips had 7, Hayden Adams 6.5, Baily Garrett 6 and Fomby 4.5.
