HIGHLAND — It wasn’t a district game, but Friday’s Battle of the Hornets still decided Nolan County superiority and Blackwell will have that distinction again after coming away with a 27-24 win at Highland.
Blackwell never trailed, but Highland kept it close right down to the very end with a 1-yard TD throw from Max Ferguson to Nolan Montgomery with :00 left to play.
Blackwell held leads of 6-0, 13-6 and 21-6 at the breaks and had just one more yard of total offense (217) than Highland (216) to improve to 2-0, while Highland’s record dropped to 1-1.
Blackwell led 121-113 in the rushing department, but Highland had a 103-96 advantage in passing.
A 2-yard run by quarterback Brandon Brinkman gave Blackwell a 6-0 lead. The visitors made it 13-0 in Blackwell’s favor on a 16-yard TD pass from Brinkman to Joel Guia and a Brinkman PAT pass to Cameron Coldiron in the second quarter, but Highland sliced the lead to 13-6 on a 57-yard scoring run by Eli Sauer in the final 10 seconds of the half. A 3-yard run by Joe Sanchez, plus Guia’s kick, made it 21-6 in Blackwell’s favor but the host Hornets weren’t through, as Ferguson and Sauer both threw scoring passes in the fourth stanza to get the lead down to three, 21-18. Both passes were caught by Montgomery, who had four catches for 85 yards to lead all receivers.
Blackwell scored what proved to be the winning points on a 5-yard run by Sanchez with 50 seconds to play. Sanchez ran for 60 yards and Sauer had 113 to lead all runners.
Michael Lowry and Brinkman were 9-of-18 passing for Blackwell. Ferguson and Sauer were 6-of-11 for Highland, which welcomes Bronte for its homecoming this Friday.
Blackwell hosts Newcastle in its next game on Friday.
