Blackwell is 5-0 after road win

HERMLEIGH — The Blackwell football team won on the road by rallying from an early deficit Friday to beat Hermleigh, 64-35.
With the win, Blackwell improved to 5-0 at the halfway mark of the season and dropped Hermleigh to 2-3.
Hermleigh led 16-12 after one quarter but Blackwell went ahead to stay on Brandon Brinkman’s 3-yard run early in the second quarter. The Hornets built their lead to 11 points, 40-29, by halftime and 56-29 after three periods of play.
Hermleigh was No. 14 in this week’s D-I poll but the Hornets, ranked No. 13 in D-II, used five touchdown passes — four by Brinkman and one by Michael Lowry — and 297 yards in the air to take control and finish on a 30-6 run after leading just 34-29 late in the first half.
Brinkman, who also ran for two scores, threw TD passes to Lowry of 22 and 61 and one each to Cameron Coldiron (14 yards) and Peyton Hinckley (42 yards). Meanwhile, Lowry threw a 32-yard TD passes to Coldiron. Brinkman's TD runs went 30 and 2 yards. Lowry was the Hornets' top receiver with four catches for 116 yards and Coldiron had four catches for 91 yards. Caleb Sirmons (two for 32) and Devin Clower (one for 16) also caught passes from Brinkman or Lowry (12-of-23 in all). Brinkman led rushers with 84 yards on 17 carries.
Blackwell's defense scored two TDs on fumble recoveries, with Junior Guia returning his 72 yards and Clower recovering his in the end zone for the last TD, which came with just 43 seconds left on Friday. Coldiron had 14 tackles to lead the Hornets in that defensive category, while Brinkman and Lowry each had 10 tackles, Joel Guia eight, Junior Guia seven, Hunter Perry and Brenden Scott five and Clower two.
