Sweetwater will try to put Saturday’s 10-9 loss to Abilene Cooper behind when it visits Brownfield at 2 p.m. today.
Two seven-run leads vs. Cooper made Saturday’s defeat in the Mustangs' final game of the Abilene Invitational Baseball Tournament hard to swallow.
Up 9-2 after 4 1/2 innings, Sweetwater’s lead disappeared as Cooper scored two runs in the fifth, then added three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull out a come-from-behind win.
Sweetwater also led 7-0 after a six-run second inning in Saturday’s game that included four hits and two Cougar errors, plus two walks.
Justen Gomez, Chris Thompson, Mason Max-well and Tristan Longoria had RBI singles in the inning. The last run scored on a sacrifice fly by Ky Hoover, and the first scored on a Cooper error.
Sweetwater added single runs in the third and fifth innings to take its second seven-run lead. In the third inning, the Mustangs scored on an RBI double by Thompson. In the fifth, Kiante McCoy singled to score the last Sweetwater run and make it 9-2.
Starting pitcher Ky Hoover went six innings but was lifted after Cooper’s first two batters in the seventh reached on a single and a double, and was replaced on the mound by Tristan Longoria.
The Cougars then scored on an error, wild pitch and sacrifice fly, plus a bunt single, to win the game.
Sweetwater finished 1-4 at the three-day tournament, dropping its season record to 7-7. After today's game, the Mustangs will host Burkburnett at 2 p.m. Friday and will then start District 5-4A action next Tuesday, when it hosts Big Spring.
