With the season winding down, three area boys basketball teams still have a shot at making the playoffs — a goal three girls teams have already reached.
One of those girls teams, Blackwell, claims the 11-1A title if the Lady Hornets win at Veribest tonight. It will be a winner-take-all-game as Blackwell and Veribest will both take 9-2 records into tonight’s season finale.
While the winner is the No. 1 seed, the loser may be tied with Robert Lee (8-3) and face a tiebreaker for the No. 2 seed if the Lady Steers also win over Irion County, which is 3-8 in 11-1A.
All three of the area boys teams still have a playoff shot and Highland — which is 3-2 in 13-1A — is in the best position, leading Westbrook (2-4) for the No. 3 and final berth after beating 4-2 Ira 37-23 Friday. The Hornets host Loraine (0-6) tonight.
But in 11-1A, Blackwell (5-5) must win at Veribest (6-4) in another No. 3 battle tonight to keep its playoff hopes alive. Veribest will clinch the No. 3 seed if it defeats Blackwell.
On Friday, Blackwell was a 57-38 winner in its final home game over Bronte, which is 1-8 in 11-1A.
The Roscoe boys have gone 2-1 — following an 0-4 start — to get in contention in 8-2A where four teams — including Haskell (3-4), Cross Plains (2-5) and Hawley (2-5) — all seek the No. 4 and last playoff spot with three games left to play.
Roscoe hosts Cross Plains tonight and can get a jump on Haskell and Hawley, who are taking on district co-leaders Albany and Stamford, respectively.
On Friday, Roscoe will host Stamford and ends its season by hosting Hawley next Tuesday as the Plowboys play their last three at home. The 3-6 girls come off a loss to Haskell, but just 39-31 to the No. 4 Lady Indians, and losses by both Cross Plains and Hawley put Roscoe in the playoffs last Friday.
Sweetwater’s girls beat Big Spring 55-39 Friday to go 5-3 in their 5-4A finale. The Lady Mustangs face Snyder (4-3) for the No. 2 seed at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Anson, assuming Snyder defeats 0-7 Lake View in Snyder this evening.
