1963 Graduating Class Of Newman High School Gathers For Reunion

Staff Writer

In spite of the downpour of October 12-13, 2018, 37 members plus their guests of the Newman High School Graduating Class of Sweetwater, met at Homecoming events Friday and at the Holiday Inn Express on Saturday to celebrate 55 years since graduation.
It was May of 1963 when 150 of us walked across the stage at the historic Municipal Auditorium to receive diplomas. Since that time, we’ve met every five years since 1983, when we gathered, for the first time after graduating, at Sweetwater Country Club for a 20th reunion. We again filled up the ballroom of the Country Club at our 50th year anniversary at Homecoming in 2013.
Conversations included remembering the summer of 1957 before our 7th grade year, another abundant rain and Nolan County lakes filling up. Some recalled the circus atmosphere at Sweetwater Lake when several of us sat on the spillway as it overflowed, catching carp with our hands. Also, voiced was hope and prayers for the present rain to continue that week so area lakes would fill up again. We talked about children and grandchildren, a few great grands added since we last met; and, our teachers throughout our 12 years in Sweetwater schools. The one most remembered and loved was Homer K. Taylor, SHS English instructor, who left us in 2018. Mr. Taylor made our first reunion celebration in 1983 and every five year reunion through our 50th in 2013.
Led by Bob Hefner, reunion committee chair, and assisted by Glenda Haas Casto, JoAnn Williams Painter, Clyde Wagner, Joe Wright, Larry Gee, Clif Phillips, Bo Browning, Lloyd Rasco, Larry Gee, Judy Hartgraves Romine, Lloyd Rasco, Jenene Headstream Taylor, Betty Sawyers Myers and Linda Ware Hillyer, met and planned since January 2018 for this special time.
Since 1963, we’ve lost 47 of our classmates. Each reunion is a memorial in some form for these 47 whom we love and miss so much.
