PECOS — A total of sev-en Sweetwater High School athletes qualified for regio-nal competition with top-four finishes at the District 3/4-3A area track meet in Pecos on Friday.
Two of the athletes, Nick Nemir and Suede Shirley, qualified for regionals in more than one event. Both are seniors.
Nemir qualified in the boys 300-meter hurdles for the third straight year with a second-place time of 39.31. He will also be a first-time regional qualifier in the 110 hurdles, where he was third with a time of 15.14, and in the long jump, where he placed second (21-1 1/2). Nemir had personal bests in all three events. He also ran a leg on the fifth-place 400 relay (44.1).
Shirley, meanwhile, qual-ified as a member of the girls 800 relay that placed third with a time of 1:47.89, and she also qualified in the 200-meter dash where she placed fourth with a time of 26.96. Shirley will be going to regional competition for the first time.
The other boys qualifiers for Sweetwater are Deandre Gatson, who was second in the triple jump (41-8 1/2); and Kaleb Hoover, who was third in the 400 (51.39). The other girls members of the 800 relay in addition to Shirley are Kelsi Crosson, Kendra Crosson and Abby Garcia. Also, Kayla Chowning qualified for regional competition in the girls high jump where she placed fifth (4-10), only to advance when a Big Spring girl who finished in the top four was scratched.
The other boys members of the 400 relay were Jonathan Browning, Jay Lomas and Isaiah McGee, and McGee also placed eighth in the 200 (23.3).
The girls’ 1,600 relay of Mickenzie Brownlow, Ken-dra Crosson, Marissa San-chez and Shirley was sixth (4:20.69); Kelsi Crosson was fifth in the triple jump (32-7 1/2); Zanesha Collins was seventh in the discus (90-0 1/2); and Cierra Knox was eighth in the discus (29-10). The regional meet begins Friday in Lubbock.
