Though they don’t start the playoffs until next week, the Highland and Roscoe girls basketball teams won’t be idle this weekend. Both have scheduled warmup games to prepare them for postseason play.
Highland (10-0 in District 13-A, 27-3) plays Valley at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Jay-ton after ending district with a 67-24 win over Hermleigh while Roscoe (7-3, 18-11) gets a tuneup at 5 p.m. today vs. Zephyr in Zephyr.
While Highland will be making a playoff trip for the 12th straight year, the 2012-13 Lady Hornets have been especially dominant with all 10 wins in district play by 21 points or more. Highland received a first-round bye as district champion and won’t start the playoffs until at least Feb. 14.
Roscoe, the 13-A runnerup, gets no bye and will face Sterling City on Monday in bi-district. The game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. in Winters. Sterling City (9-5, 16-11) was the No. 3 team in 14-A this season.
There are still two games left to play for the District 13-A boys and the three playoff teams are known. Highland (6-2, 13-13) is second in the district to Ira (8-0), taking over the No. 2 spot after Tuesday’s 37-31 win over Hermleigh (5-3). The Hornets are at 1-7 Westbrook today while Roscoe (2-6) will visit Hermleigh. Highland ends the regular season by hosting Ira next Tuesday and Hermleigh entertains Loraine (2-6), so a tiebreaker may be necessary.
