The Sweetwater and Highland girls both lost in their respective title games Saturday after advancing to the finals with semifinal wins on Friday.
Sweetwater (9-7) lost 38-35 in overtime to Mid-land Christian at Stanton’s tournament after advancing with a 49-27 semifinal romp Friday over host Stanton.
Kendra Crosson scored 20 points and Suede Shirley 14 to pace the Lady Mustangs’ semifinal win. Sweetwater led 13-7, 25-16 and 39-22 at the breaks. Sweetwater also led 16-10 Midland Christian at halftime of the title game, but it was tied 30-30 at the end of regulation. Crosson, who along with Shirley was named to the all-tourna-ment team, led Sweetwater again by scoring 17 points.
Highland (12-3), mean-while, lost to Garden City 31-24 in the finals of High-land’s tournament. Satur-day’s loss ended a 10-game winning streak for the Lady Hornets, who were the defending champs and beat Eldorado 54-25 in their semifinal game on Friday.
Sierra Allen scored 21 points and Hannah Alen and Lora Stewart nine each in the win over Eldorado. Highland was ahead 28-11 at halftime, then jumped out to an 8-2 lead over Garden City after one quarter only to be outscored 29-16 the rest of the way.
The Roscoe girls finished third at Highland’s tourna-ment after beating Eldorado 40-19. Eva Aguayo paced Roscoe with 11 points. The Plowgirls lost to Garden City 25-20 in the semifinals.
Also in the tournament were Blackwell’s girls, who lost their consolation game Friday to Sands 44-30 des-pite getting 15 points from Stephanie Metcalf.
Roscoe’s boys (3-5) won 32-30 in a Nolan County shootout with Highland to take third place after both teams lost in the semifinals on Friday. Jesus Leanos led Roscoe to the win with 13 points. Roscoe was defeated 70-31 by Garden City in the semifinals. Highland’s Ron Covington had 11 points vs. Roscoe and Ethan Wilson had 11 points against Robert Lee on Friday in a game the Hornets lost 60-26.
The boys title game Satur-day between Garden City and Robert Lee was won by Garden City by a score of 45-42.
Also, the Blackwell boys were defeated by Baird 42-41 in the seventh-place game. Blackwell also lost to Roscoe 47-40 and to Jayton 53-18 at the tournament. Mason Magness and Mark Monroe each had 11 points against Baird.
Sweetwater’s boys (3-6) won 53-49 Saturday over Midland Classical at Stan-ton’s tournament after losing 70-66 in overtime on Friday against Coahoma.
Dylan Bennett scored 18 points, Isaiah McGee 13 and Michael Hunt 12 vs. Coaho-ma while against Midland Classical, Michael Hunt had 16 points and Rhett Torres had 13. Sweetwater opened on Thursday against Sands and lost 50-33. Sands advanced to the finals on Saturday and defeated host team Stanton 54-51.
Sweetwater’s teams host Brownwood Tuesday. the girls play at 6 and the boys tip off at 7:30 in the season’s first doubleheader.
