Sweetwater High School’s JV and freshman basketball teams traveled to Merkel this past Tuesday and the JV and freshman boys hos-ted Breckenridge Friday.
On Tuesday, the JV boys were defeated by Merkel 40-34 but the freshman boys beat Merkel’s fresh-men 42-16. The JV girls are 11-0 after defeating Merkel 32-22, while the freshman girls beat Merkel 30-18.
Jack Poe led the JV boys (0-5) with 21 points while Matthew Trevino had five, John Browning four and Brandon Sutton and Deshawn Williams two. For the freshman boys, Denzell Moore scored 15 points while Hardy Escobar had eight, Colton Jackson six, Michael Lawrence four, Isaiah Gonzales and Adan Sanchez three, Mark Lawrence two and J’Corey Amos one. For the JV girls, Cierra Knox scored 13 vs. Merkel while Morgan Whitley scored six, Shaneese Brown and Maddie Jones four, Jaya Atkins three and Lexi Castillo two. In the freshman girls game, Morgan Rudel had 14, Ashley Parker eight, Caroline Guelker three, Abby Garcia and Marissa Sanchez two and Alaina Andrews one.
The JV boys lost 53-29 to Breckenridge. Poe had 10 points while Browning had eight, Williams six, Mike McCoy three and Michael Hazard two. The freshman boys (3-0) won 37-16 with Moore scoring eight, Esco-bar seven, Amos six, Gon-zales and Michael Lawrence five and Mark Lawrence, Jackson and Brandon Gut-ierrez two.
