Nolan County SWCD assists with land and water resources

In the 1930s the U.S. experienced some of the worst dust storms recorded in history. Protection of topsoil became a priority and as a result, soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs) were formed so landowners could work together at the local level to solve a major problem. With the emphasis on "going green" these days, soil and water conservation districts are as important as ever.

Susan Conner-Ellenburg — I started a worm farm. They eat all your leftovers and you use their castings for fertilizer. I also started an herb garden and I’m growing flowers.

DHRD adopts a highway

Members of Dark Horse Roller Derby recently cleaned up their stretch of highway for the Adopt-A-Highway program.
They cleaned the two mile stretch of Loop 170 in front of the WASP Museum, heading towards Texas State Technical College and ending by the Elks Lodge.

City recycling center doing its part to help the environment

Earth Day is April 22 and everyone in Sweetwater can easily do their part to help the environment. If you were unaware, Sweetwater has a refuse disposal and recycling drop-off center located at 807 W. Broadway and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drop-off center provides a spot for area residents and businesses to take their refuse for transit to a certified disposal site.

Jaycees hosts annual Easter egg hunt

The Sweetwater Jaycees hosted their annual Easter egg hunt at Fraley Park for children of the community.
Hundreds of plastic treat-filled eggs and many other Easter prizes were sought after at the hunt. Several of the eggs contained tickets for prizes such as Easter baskets.

City of Roscoe hosts Easter egg hunt

The city-sponsored Easter Egg Hunt in Roscoe took place on Saturday at Old Town Park across from City Hall on Cypress Street.
Hunts took place for three separate age groups and everyone was invited. The Easter bunny also made an appearance to greet the children.

Texas National Bank awards Good Grades Pay winners

Fifty-eight Sweetwater High School students made the A-Honor Roll in the fifth six weeks, and Texas National Bank continued with its commitment to recognize and award one lucky scholar from each grade with $50. The winners of the Texas National Bank Good Grades Pay Award for the fifth six seeks were Lauren Jones (9th grade), Michael Hunt (10th grade), Eliza Delgado (11th grade) and James Clift (12th grade).

SEED hears report on hospital bond election

A report on the upcoming bond election for Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) was given at the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board of directors meeting held on Monday morning.
The vote for the Phase 4 Renovation and expansion at the hospital will be held on Saturday, May 10.

Contest winners help name maned wolf pups

Highland ISD class among winners

The Maned Wolf puppies at the Abilene Zoo are nameless no more.
Several hundred zoo guests cast ballots to name the pups, choosing among a selection of South American-inspired names to reflect the pups’ indigenous habitat.
The winning monikers were “Sofia” for the female pup and “Cruz” for the male.
Those who voted for the winning names were then entered into a drawing for two paw print paintings pawed by the puppies.

Beat the Street for Little Feet slated for April 26

If you're looking to put a little spring in your step, the second annual "Beat the Street for Little Feet" just might be the ticket!
The event will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 at Cornerstone Christian School, which is part of 4th and Elm Church of Christ, and will include a 5K run, a 50K bike tour and a one-mile fun run. Each race costs $25 per person.
All funds raised from the event will go toward program enhancement and scholarships, as the school strives to lay a foundation educationally, spiritually, socially and emotionally for children ages one through eight.

Trinity Baptist welcomes new pastor on Easter Sunday

The church family at Trinity Baptist Church is blessed to welcome our new pastor, Bro. Matt McGowen, to the pulpit this Sunday. Easter Sunday is an historical date for our church. The very first worship service in Trinity’s newly-built sanctuary in 1958 was held on Easter Sunday. Our previous pastor, Bro. Ward Hayes, preached his first sermon as our pastor on Easter Sunday, 2003. Bro. Matt will preach his first sermon at Trinity on Easter Sunday. Welcome to Sweetwater, Bro. Army plane crashes near city; 25 killed

April 20, 2014 marks the 69th anniversary of the U.S.A.A.F. C-47 plane crash south of Sweetwater, Texas. The following is an article published by The Nolan County News on Thursday, April 28, 1945.

Death at dawn Friday morning of 25 Army Air Force officers and enlisted men from the Midland Army Air Field in the crash and burning of an Army transport in a pasture on the Bob Withers farm, 3 miles south of Sweetwater, brought the war still nearer home to the residents of this area.

WETS makes presentation at SEED meeting

At the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board of directors meeting held on Monday, a report from WETS (Wind Energy Turbine Services) was given.
In attendance at the meeting were three of the four co-owners of the company--Larry Martin, Mark Meneses and Jason Hefner. James McCasland makes up the fourth member of leadership.
