County proclaims April as Child Abuse Awareness Month

A proclamation was approved by the Nolan County Commissioners at their meeting held on Monday morning to declare the month of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The proclamation noted that last year, over 40,000 cases of child abuse and neglect were confirmed. Preventing child abuse is a community-wide effort where solutions can be found by involving everyone.

SEED close to closing on new industrial property

At the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board of directors meeting on Monday, approval was given for the purchase of some property to be used as an access point for SEED's new industrial property.
The new industrial property is located on West Broadway, and the approval during Monday's meeting was a purchase from Oncor Electric on CR 141. Negotiations had been taking place on the cost, which was agreed by both entities at the price of $35,000.

Local woman killed Tuesday in accident outside Roby

A Sweetwater woman was killed Tuesday morning in a two vehicle crash along US Highway 180 about 11.1 miles west of Roby.
Brenda Karen Rainey, 61, of Sweetwater was driving a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta west on U.S. Highway 180 around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday when she was struck by a man driving a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup heading east.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Frank Perez Reyes, Jr., 84, of Snyder. He crossed the center stripe, hitting Rainey’s vehicle head-on.

Taste of Sweetwater raises money for Meals on Wheels

The community of Sweetwater once again stepped to the plate to help those in need. The Nolan County Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), held the 28th Annual Taste of Sweetwater at the Nolan County Coliseum annex building.
Twenty three local food establishments participated in this year’s event, with all types of food represented. According to SNAP director, Tonya Challis, the crowd numbered at about 350 and helped to raise about $3,568 for the non-profit organization.

Charles Roberson Memorial Golf Tournament slated for May

The Nolan County United Way's Charles Roberson Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Sweetwater Country Club.
The tournament will benefit Nolan County United Way's nine local agencies: Big Country Medical Reserve Corps, Boy Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Gateway Family Services, Girl Scouts, SNAP, Sweetwater BackPack Buddies, West Texas Children's Advocacy Center and Women's Resource Center.
Pre-registration fees are $200 per team or $50 per individual. The cost to register at the tournament will be $240 and $55, respectively.

County commissioners discuss pending project from TxDOT road grant

Discussion was held at Monday's Nolan County Commissioners meeting regarding the county's pending project from the TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) grant which would be used to repair county roads from oil and gas exploration, development or production.
County Attorney Lisa Peterson shared that the county received $751,155, an increase from the $675,000 they were expecting to receive. While the application is available online, some issues were noted which led to concerns from the county's legal team.

DI team competes in state tournament

The Destination Imagination team from Sweetwater Intermediate School traveled to Austin for their state tournament on April 11. Students on the team are pictured from left to right, Kimberly Arpin, Danner Foust, Ethan Cortez, Jazzel Villa, Jacqueline Arellano and teacher, Kayla Scott.
Destination Imagination is an educational program where student teams use creativity and team work to solve problems and present the solutions.

Easter bunny to be at Doug Sitter State Farm

The Easter Bunny will make a special visit to Doug Sitter State Farm on Lamar this Thursday, April 17, from 4-5:30 p.m. Bring your camera and stop by to take a free photo with the bunny. Also, register to win prizes and enjoy treats for the kids.
"We have so much fun doing this every year. We love seeing so many adorable children so excited to see the Easter bunny and pick out a treat from her basket. And sometimes we even have an adult or two that joins in on the fun," said Doug Sitter.

WTEC works with area colleges to collaborate on regional education, workforce initiatives

On Friday, March 7, the West Texas Energy Consortium (WTxEC or Consortium) hosted a regional meeting for all community and technical colleges in the Consortium's region. The eight colleges in attendance included: Cisco College, Ranger College, Texas State Technical College West Texas, Howard College both San Angelo and Big Spring campuses, Western Texas College, Odessa College and Midland College.
A number of initiatives were proposed including a Regional Transfer Agreement that will align classes and programs across the region to simplify transference among regional partners.

SHS students place in Academic UIL competition

Several Sweetwater High School students participated in the Academic UIL competition. Advancing to the State competition are Kevin Thompson, who received first place in Current Issues and Events; Rachel Gray who received first place in News, first in Headlines and second in Editorials.
Jonathon Browning received third place in Spelling and was named a State Alternate.
Members of the second place team in Social Studies included Cody Kincheloe (fifth place in Social Studies), Eathen Speer (fourth place in Social Studies), Austin Watts and Francisco Olguin.

Taste of Sweetwater benefits local seniors

The Taste of Sweetwater is an annual event people of Sweetwater and the surrounding areas have come to enjoy. It is a chance for residents to sample foods from many local restaurants and other food establishments under one roof. This year, the event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 14, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The cost is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for children ages 3-12.
