APPLAUSE music series ‘Broadway Lights’ takes place this Saturday

On Saturday, Oct. 4, "Broadway Lights" will take place at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium, located at 400 Locust Street, as part of its APPLAUSE Music Series.
Local participants include the Sweetwater Municipal Band directed by Billy Weems, along with local accompanist Martha Taylor. However, the production will feature special guests Annika Johannson, Brandon Wilhelm and Dr. Rick Piersall.

Donations sought for skate park

During a recent road trip, Gonzalo 'Speedy' San Miguel saw a skate park in the city of Post. It prompted him to wonder why the kids around Sweetwater who skate, skateboard, rollerblade and ride BMX bikes don't have a park to call their own.
Thanks to the efforts of San Miguel and local businesses, the park could become a reality by May of next year.

Cindy Hamlin named Outstanding Young Citizen

Cody Paty, the recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Young Citizen of the Year award, presented this year's honor to Cindy Hamlin.
"This year's recipient, I feel, displays all the attributes that are deserving of recognition," said Paty. "She has been described by all the people that I visited with about her as just a good person who is always happy to help and finds joy in serving."

Lita McEachern named Outstanding Female Citizen

September 30, 2014

Karan Bergstrom presented the 2014 Outstanding Female Citizen award on behalf of last year’s recipient, AdaBelle Clark, to Lita McEachern.
“I am honored to present this award tonight,” Bergstrom said. “This lady has devoted her life to community service, starting in high school. Her best friend says she is a busy body and that she gives 110% to her many projects.”

Gil Cherry named Outstanding Male Citizen

Rodney Foster made the presentation of the 2014 Outstanding Male Citizen to Gil Cherry on behalf of the family of Wes Bishop, who earned last year’s honor.
Foster continued, “Our 2014 Outstanding Male Citizen is truly outstanding. I could think of many adjectives that describe him, but the following sum it up best: Godly, servant leader, family man and energy.”

Allen’s Family Style Meals named Business of the Year

Receiving the honor of 2014 Business of the Year was Allen’s Family Style Meals. Presenting the honor was Terry Pittman, superintendent of Sweetwater Independent School District. SISD was the 2013 recipient of the Business of the Year award.
Urvin and Lizzie Allen opened Allen’s CafĂ© at 101 Oak Street in 1942. This was across from the T&P Rail Depot. After Urvin passed away in 1946, Lizzie continued to operate the cafĂ© for several years.

Flu vaccine, Hoyt Place party scheduled today

Today, September 30, the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department will be administering the flu vaccine from 8 to 11:30 a.m. only.
Also, Hoyt Place, located at 1700 Hoyt Avenue, will have a Classic Country, Kicking Karaoke Party on Tuesday, Sept. 30, between the hours of 5:30-7 p.m.
There will have a BBQ potluck and Karaoke Sing-a-long conducted by Mrs. Mary Dement, and everyone is invited! For more information contact Hoyt Place at (325) 235-5655.

Meet and greet under the Oaks planned for Oct. 13

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, "Meet and Greet Under the Oaks" will be held.
Everyone in attendance can ride in a designated vehicle carrying those who want to go on the free tour of the 73-acre Camp Boothe Oaks. Children under seven years of age must be accompanied by an adult or parent.
