Man injured in vehicle fire

According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, a man was working on the fuel tank of his vehicle in the Check Mart parking lot on Lamar Street Saturday afternoon when the fuel tank caught fire. The man sustained a second degree burn on his side and singed some of his hair in the blaze.

County Commission awards $5,000 to juvenile detention

The Nolan County Commission awarded an additional $5,000 in funds to detain juvenile offenders within the county Monday during a regular meeting at the Nolan County Courthouse.

TNB awards Good Grades Pay winners

Fifty Sweetwater High School students made the A-Honor Roll in the fifth six weeks of the 2014-2015 school year and Texas National Bank continued with its commitment to recognize and award one lucky scholar from each grade with $50.

National Paper Clover Campaign continues support of Nolan County 4-H youth

The National 4-H Council has announced the launch of the spring 2015 4-H Paper Clover Campaign in partnership with Tractor Supply Company (TSC). This event marks the sixth year of collaboration between the organizations on the national in-store fundraiser, benefiting state and local 4H programming in each of the communities where a TSC or Del’s Farm and Feed Supply store is located.

One company in the field, Strat Aero, has pioneered what is quickly becoming the cutting edge of aeronautics — including the use of UAVs, training UAV pilots, and creating software designed to work onboard UAVs which reports back their findings.

Bicycle Safety Rodeo set for Thursday

A Bicycle Safety Rodeo will take place from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 in the south east parking lot at the corner of 4th and Elm.
Free helmets will be given as well as a chance to win a bike. Participants are asked to bring their own bicycle as they will not be provided in order for participation.

Melinda Torres story shared for National Minority Health Month

April is National Minority Health Month. This month, the story of the late Melinda Torres, a resident of Sweetwater, was shared on the Facebook page for "Delete Blood Cancer."
The organization began in 1990, when Peter Harf and his daughters went door-to-door in an effort to find a donor match for his wife and their mother, Mechtild Harf. Although Mechtild lost her battle, the Harfs started a bone marrow donor center in her honor that has since grown to be the world’s largest, with branches in the United States, Germany, United Kingdom and Spain.

Cumbie to compete at international DECA conference

This weekend will be the culmination of three years’ work for Sweetwater High School (SHS) senior Blake Cumbie, as he heads to Orlando, Florida to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference, which will be held at the Orange County Convention Center from April 25 through 28.
Unlike extracurricular programs, DECA is co-curricular, which makes the program a vital part of classroom instruction. The class teaches real-life skills in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality, management and entrepreneurship, where students can then participate in over 100 competitions.

Library hosts bullying seminar

A workshop was recently held at the County-City Library called "Is Your Child a Target of Bullying?" which discussed various types of bullying, its impact on children — notably those with disabilities and intervention strategies and roles to prevent bullying.
The presentation was given by Jennifer Pittman, the regional coordinator of the PEN Project, one of three federally-funded Parent Training and Information Centers (PTI) that serve Texas parents of children and youth with disabilities ages 0-26.

Driver in vehicle wreck transported to RPMH

April 24, 2015

Around 5 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, the Sweetwater Fire Department was called to a vehicle wreck on East Broadway in front of Casa Morales Restaurant where one vehicle had wrecked into a utility pole. The driver of the vehicle was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Auditorium board eyes former police building

The former police station, located at 204 East 4th Street, has served a myriad of purposes throughout its nearly 90-year history. When it was opened in the late 1920s, it was the original city hall. It has since served as an agriculture extension office, pubic library and finally, the headquarters for city law enforcement.
Now that the police department has moved into its new building on Avenue A, the Municipal Auditorium board of directors hopes to acquire the unused portion of the building and repurpose it to fit its needs.
