Inspirational concert event set for Saturday at SMA

The Applause Music Series is continuing its acclaimed programming with “Lift Every Voice” on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. Sponsored by Robert and Jimmie Bender, the upcoming concert is to feature a variety of artists and musical groups performing songs of inspiration.

Bender honored for dedicated service to regional childcare services programs

Jimmie Bender began to work for Child Care Services in July 1991 and within 30 days was elevated to the position of director – the third such one in the program’s short eight month existence. Over the course of the next 23 years, she successfully led her team through a myriad of changes – including changes in oversight from the Department of Health and Human Services, to the Texas Workforce Commission and finally to the local Workforce Development Board — and also through changes in contractor agencies, which included relocating the entire operation from Sweetwater to Abilene.

Winds will be from the east-northeast at 10 to 15 mph. Little to no ice accumulation is expected, although total daytime snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches is possible.
For tonight, expect a 40% chance of snow and freezing drizzle, with cloudy skies and a low around 24. Winds will be from the east around 10 mph, with wind chill values between 14 and 19. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Local choirs to perform at APPLAUSE event

On Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium will be the scene of a night to remember. Three choral groups will be joined by soloists in an exciting evening of traditional spirituals, gospel, praise songs and Broadway fare from Porgy and Bess and Ragtime.

SMS, East Ridge recognized at SISD board meeting

Sweetwater Middle School was recognized at the school board for a Distinction Designation for Academic Achievement in Social Studies.
East Ridge Elementary School was recognized at the school board for a distinction designation for scoring in the Top 25% in closing performance gaps.

Today, we'll have a 20 percent chance of snow before noon, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 32. Winds will be breezy, with a north-northeast winds at 15 to 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. Wind chill values could get between 14 and 21.
Those mostly cloudy skies will remain tonight, with a low around 19 and wind chill values between 7 and 17. Winds will be from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph, and after midnight, we'll have a 20 percent chance of snow.

Bender volunteers as event chair for Lift Every Voice concert

Jimmie Bender is the event chair for the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium APPLAUSE Music Series’ fourth concert, Lift Every Voice. She has recruited volunteers, helped organize the reception, served as a liaison with choirs and local community leaders and volunteered as a primary fundraiser for the event.

Lady Hornets 'net' another trip to the regional tourney

Highland's Hannah Allen begins trimming down the net after a 56-39 win over Grady on Tuesday that advanced her team back to the Region II-1A tournament in Abilene later this week. The Lady Hornets, who won the tournament and advanced to state the last two years, face Garden City in the II-1A semis at 1 p.m. Friday at Abilene Christian University's Moody Coliseum.

RPMH offers free cholesterol screening

February is American Heart Month and to observe this occasion, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 8 a.m. to noon to offer free cholesterol screening. There will be pamphlets and information available on cholesterol.
