The courtyard at East Ridge Elementary is blooming with recent renovations. After the portable buildings were removed from the area between the two classroom wings, the courtyard was left with dirt and a bit of grass. The PTO decided to use proceeds from the students' fall fundraising efforts to make the courtyard a more useable and inviting space.
A PTO committee, consisting of school moms Jana Hall, Brenda Valdez, Aubrey Turnbow and LaDawn Daniel, was put together to survey the teachers - to see what they would like in a courtyard space - and put together a plan. The survey stated that an outdoor reading area with trees and shade was desired. From this, a design was created which is now coming to fruition. The design includes a gazebo, over 12 tons of limestone rock from nearby Lueders, about 1,000 square feet of new walking paths, four outdoor picnic tables, a half dozen new trees and a variety of native plants that will attract wildlife. The gazebo from Golden Rule Gazebos (with interior seating for holding a class) and concrete pathways (formed and poured by Triple A Construction of Sweetwater) are already in place.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the project or donating funds to be used for a tree or bench in honor of loved one, may contact Jana Hall at 236-6281 or Sheila Martin at East Ridge at 235-5282 ext. 406. The students are excited about their new spot for reading, eating and old-fashioned play.
